In Design and Technology students combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. The subjects offered within the Design and Technology department are Food Technology and Product Design.

The Curriculum

Design and Technology is partnered with the Art department and students split their year evenly between Product Design, Food Technology and Art. Project work and stand-alone lessons are used to develop our students’ skills across all three subjects. The subjects are assessed individually but a final overall level for Design and Technology is given for each year.

The Design and Technology courses offered at Key Stage 4 are WJEC Catering and AQA Product Design. Both subjects, taken over 2 years, include a controlled assessment module (aka coursework) and a final written examination at the end of the 2 years. The controlled assessment module allows students to design, make and develop individual products within a set design context. Innovative, imaginative and demanding products that demonstrate creativity, flair and originality are rewarded with higher grades. This module contributes 60% of the final grade.
